Tourist Signing Policy - Consultation 2011

The existing Standard containing guidance on the provision of tourist destination signs on the all purpose and motorway trunk road network is TD 52/04 “Traffic Signs to Tourist Attractions and Facilities in England” contained within the Design Manual For Roads and Bridges (DMRB). The current tourist
signing guidelines does not adequately represent the nature of Wales, its tourist industry, topography or road network. Consequently, it is proposed that a new policy should be developed to consider these issues, that can be fairly and consistently applied and which will make the application process and costs implications clearer. This will have road safety at its core whilst also striking a balance that is appropriate for the economy and tourism industry.

• A tourist destination means a permanently established attraction or facility
which attracts or is used by visitors to an area and is open to the public
without prior booking during its normal working hours.
• Tourist attractions include visitor centres, theme parks, historic buildings,
museums, zoos, parks and gardens, natural attractions (such as nature
reserves, beaches and viewpoints), areas of special interest, country tours,
tourist routes, sports centres, concert venues, theatres and cinemas.
• Tourist facilities include hotels, guesthouses, bed & breakfast
establishments, public houses, restaurants, holiday parks, touring and
camping parks, picnic sites and Tourist Information Centres.
• These lists are not exhaustive, but give a broad indication of the types of
establishments in each category.
