People 1st is carrying out a major research study with employers across the hospitality and tourism industry, involving 4,000 telephone interviews with businesses across the UK between now and mid-November
The results will be used to develop the 2013 State of the Nation report, the definitive guide to skills in our industry and used to inform and influence government and the education system.

Dr Manon Williams has been appointed to the Welsh Government from the Tourism Sector Panel to lead the implementation of the new tourism strategy to be launched in March 2013. Dr Williams will take up the role of Chief Executive Officer - Tourism and Marketing for Wales.
The new tourism strategy will focus on the achievement of growth targets in the period up to and beyond 2020. Dr Williams will be appointed for a two year term and early in her appointment will lead a review of organisational structures for Tourism... Read More

Recycle on the Go Wales - new grant issued
WRAP Cymru has launched its new package of support to help venues and event organisers introduce recycling facilities for their visitors. The Recycle on the Go project offers grants of up to £50,000 towards the cost of recycling equipment, plus consultancy support to help businesses choose the right solutions for them.

A Consumer Focus Wales report is due out later this week in relation to concerns expressed in its recent survey of the industry and consumers on a range of issues. The survey "Park Life" will report the results from respondents who have experienced problems with the running and management of their site over the past five years. The watchdog has contacted over 250 residents and all 22 local authorities in Wales along with the police, voluntary sector organisations and the park homes industry.

The European Commission is calling on small businesses to tell them what can be done better and to provide ideas on how to reduce burdensome legislation. Once complete, the Commission will analyse the results and consider how situation for SMEs could be improved.

Driven by business and VFR visits the second quarter of 2012 continued recent growth (up 2% on second quarter 2011). Overall there were 8.5 million visits from overseas - 0.16 million more than the second quarter of 2011, although overall visits remained below that seen 2006-2008.

International Passenger Survey figures for the Olympic period (not Paralympic) showed visitor numbers, at 3.03 million, are down 5% on last August. However, visitor expenditure, which is the one that really counts was £2.38 billion - 9% more than last August.
This result is much better than many expected and the year to date figures for visitor numbers to the end of August are basically the same as in 2011.
An estimated 590,000 people came to the UK from overseas in July and August primarily due to the Olympic or Paralympic Games.... Read More

Visit Wales sponsored Wales Activity Tourism Organisation (WATO), met with John Griffiths, Minister for Environment & Sustainable Development, on the 3rd October at Ty Hywel Government offices, Cardiff Bay.
The meeting with the minister and his officials was to highlight the opportunities presented to the outdoor sector in Wales by the creation of the new Single Environment Body for Wales which will bring together the Countryside Council for Wales, Forestry Commission Wales and Environment Agency Wales into a single organisation from April next year.

Recently published stats for overnight domestic tourism in Wales for the first six months of this year show a 1% increase in trips for holidays compared to the same period in 2011, but with the number of nights declining by 8.2% and spend down 13.3%. Business visits actually increased by 27.6% but the number of nights was virtually the same as last year, with another double digit decrease in spend - down 11.3%.
